Do-At-Home Art Activities for Kids

Homemade Gluten-Free Play Dough

Les Petits Painters art and craft lessons, preschool child development exercises, kid's pencil grip, fine motor skill exercises, how art and craft benefits children
The fist grip or awkward grips of young children are normal when they are starting to learn how to hold things. By preschool age 5+, their finger muscles strengthen so they learn how to maintain the tripod (pencil grip).  Their finger and hand muscles can be developed by improving their fine motor skills through play dough –  a smashing good fun solution!

Are you a bit concerned about your child’s pencil (tripod) grip?

Each child develops at their own time but you can help them develop their fine motor skills. The muscles on their fingers and hands can be strengthened through fun art and craft exercises.

Play dough is always popular with kids and terrific in developing their finger muscles.

Here’s a super easy, 4 ingredient gluten-free recipe you can make at home. It’s softer than commercial play dough and perfect for small fingers.

– 1 cup sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
– 1/2 cup cornflour (cornstarch)
– 3/4 cup water
– food colour

Mix the sodium bicarbonate, cornflour and water together. Heat over medium fire stirring to remove all lumps.

It will look funny but that’s ok. Remove from heat and let it cool a few minutes before touching. Knead it until smooth. That’s it!

*This recipe is for 1 colour, equivalent to 2 containers of store bought play dough.

Keep in a tightly sealed plastic bag inside the refrigerator when not in use. It lasts months! If it hardens, add a tablespoon of water and heat it up. It will be as good as new!

Art-At-Home Projects for Your Little Artists

The  guided art lesson below are easy to follow and uses simple materials, most of which you probably already have at home.

For older kids, challenge them creatively to make changes:

– experiment with different colours
– add more detail to their art
– change the shapes
– use other materials found at home

Stimulate their imagination and have them explore alternative ways of doing things. Share the link with their friends and they can do virtual art projects together.
