What do you find at the park?
Open your eyes and you may see,
A frog 🐸 bathing like you and me!

Frogs love their pond to keep cool during the summer months.

Our preschoolers sculpted their frog enjoying a soak in its own jacuzzi rock pool. They kneaded white to blue until it was marbled like gentle waves; white to black for marbled pebbles.

Happy Lunar New Year!

Chinese scroll paintings originated from bamboo and silk texts approximately 475 BC. In some East Asian high quality or historical scroll paintings, there can be more than 1 chop (seal), with subsequent owners, scholars, and collectors adding their own seal.

For this project, the painting style focussed on expressive (few) strokes - Xieyi, rather than the Gongbi or meticulous and detailed style.

The kids sketched horse figurines quickly, using charcoal to capture the boldness and energy of the fire horse.

Our 3 and 4-year olds created their first pop up Valentines 💌 card, with a zillion flying colourful hearts!

Cut a coil from a piece of plastic or acetate. Glue each side of the coil to the inside of the card. Open the card to stretch the coil and glue as many paper hearts as desired.
Voilà, flying hearts!

Valentine’s Day is a day we can encourage kids to express their love 💓 and gratitude through their creativity.

They examined the colour wheel/colour dial to see the relationships of secondary, tertiary/analogous colours and tints and apply it to their work.

Labelling and writing feelings lead to greater self-awareness and enhances emotional vocabulary.

Cheers to creating a world of colour one corner at a time!

Games like Noughts & Crosses (X and O, Tic Tac Toe) offer plenty of educational benefits! The preschoolers created their Pavlova-themed game.

Math skills - for 3-year olds, placing 3 pieces in sequence in any direction; for 4-5 year olds, learning to plan their moves is critical thinking and problem solving

Social Interaction - taking turns teaches patience and playing against someone

Emotional learning for 5 year olds - if unable to complete the sequence, the feeling of losing is a learning moment 🙃.

Have you ever been to a floating market 🧺? Sellers pile their baskets high with all sorts of goods - fruits, veggies, flowers, street food, snacks, crafts, souvenirs, and more.

The kids got crafty and creative, painting traditional Thai boats and whipping up their own mini goods to sell, like skewers, noodle dishes, fruits, and veggies.

It was happily chaotic with so many ideas to add, just like a real market!

With tons of canals and boats, it's no wonder riverside communities boomed before roads were built.

The kids learned about Indonesia’s ancient art of shadow puppetry (think 800 AD) called Wayang Kulit. It was popular for storytelling. The “dayang” or puppet master would sometimes do everything by himself: dramatisation of ALL the puppets, sing, and even the sound effects.

Some shows which last for hours, use up to 500 hand painted puppets!

The kids created their own puppets, stories, and worked with each other to put on a show.

Puppets art and childhood development involves:
- imagination & creativity
- literacy and communication
- emotional learning: role play, empathy
- social skills: conversations and listening to others.

The kids had a blast and really enjoyed a different kind of art!

The Christmas season is filled with joyful moments!

Our preschoolers painted their own Koala Claus 🤶 socks. With time to spare, they designed🎄baubles with coloured Sharpies and topped them with gemstone 💎 stickers for extra sparkle ✨!

The traditional Philippine parol (“farol” in Spani

The traditional Philippine parol (“farol” in Spanish) represents the Star of Bethlehem that the 3 Kings followed to find Jesus.

During the Spanish era, residents would use these lanterns to find their way to and from the church during Simbang Gabi (9-days of very early morning mass).

Kids used pieces of fragile tissue paper (papel de Japon) and carefully glued it on their bamboo star frames. Tails were made using the technique they learned in their Mexico papel picado lesson.

Lighting of their lantern stars 🌟 lit their eyes as well!

Shadow puppets! It was so much fun 🤩!

We’re now learning about Indonesian culture in the form of “Wayang Kulit”.

The first evidence of this art was back in 800 AD! It was and still is a form of storytelling.

Master puppeteers would handle several characters, talking, singing, dancing, and some would do their own sound effects and music. Talk about multitasking!

The kids made their own moving puppets with stories, combining art, drama, and literary work in this lesson.

From chicken 🐔 nugget characters to Harry Potter penguins 🐧 , the stretched their creative minds to make their puppets come to life.

The kids asked for coloured pencil projects so they got it and gosh, did they nail it! 🤩

HongKong’s junk (“jong” meaning sailing vessel used for trade) boat is iconic and is integral to HKG’s culture and maritime heritage.

Layering and blending, pencil hand position, pressure, and directional lines are key to successful work.

It took 3 enjoyable lessons where they slowed down to do their best work. Drawn from scratch (not templates!), they started colouring lightly, building pressure and layering to create the colours they wanted.

Each technique was taught separately with an exercise so they could apply it on their work with confidence. The black pencil was banned 😅 so they made their own using dark brown and dark blue.

Terrific work, kiddos!

It was panda 🐼-monium at class to see how their soft pastel paintings came to life.

Layers of blending and patiently drawing directional lines resulted in these beautiful masterpieces.

The kids also learned about China’s “panda diplomacy”, completing our East Asia art travel class.
